Plover Cove Botanic Dye Shirt Level 2 - Tea Indigo
The Plover Cove Botanic Dye Shirt is a true testament to the boundless creativity and fearless expression of the Chinese immigrant workers from the early 20th century. Drawing inspiration from their iconic worker shirts, this garment effortlessly captures the essence of their indomitable spirit. Meticulously crafted with an impeccable eye for detail, it features faded hues, fabrics reminiscent of wear and tear, and intricate laced button styles that echo the very essence of their bygone era.
In our dyeing process, we utilised Chinese black tea, harnessing its remarkable qualities beyond flavour and medicinal benefits. Originating in ancient China, tea dyeing evolved into an art form, infusing textiles with mesmerising colours derived from tea leaves. This refined technique, developed over centuries since the Tang Dynasty, produces a range of hues, from gentle browns to rich sepia and deep greys. Today, tea dyeing imparts a touch of history and natural charm, endowing fabrics with a vintage aesthetic. To achieve the desired rustic navy effect, we first dip the fabric in active indigo dye. After oxidation and thorough rinsing, it undergoes multiple rounds of tea dyeing using black tea infused with mineral ions as the mordant. This process imbues the fabric with a natural and rustic allure, infusing a vintage or aged aesthetic into the textiles.
