Sappanwood, or "Su Mu" in traditional Chinese medicine, carries the wisdom of ancient traditions. It is valued for its therapeutic properties. It is believed to possess the ability to invigorate the body, promote harmonious balance, and facilitate restoration. Originating in Southeast Asia, Sappanwood has a rich history as a natural fabric dye in traditional textile arts. Its heartwood holds brazilin, a crimson pigment that imbues it with potent dyeing properties. The extracted dye offers a range of red hues, from delicate blush tones to deep maroons, achieved through careful concentration and meticulous techniques.

To achieve a rustic and seasoned purple hue, the fabric is first immersed in a slightly faded indigo bath with continuous agitation. Subsequently, the fabric is removed for oxidation and allowed to dry. Once dry, it undergoes another round of dyeing in a fresh Sappanwood bath where constant movement of the garment is crucial during this process. Finally, the fabric is left to dry completely, resulting in a captivating shade of purple with a subtle depth and warmth.

  • Hand dyed with Sappanwood and Indigo

  • 100% Cotton

  • Organic cotton taped zipper from Riri

  • Designed with a relaxed boxy fit and above-the-belt crop

  • Each piece will have its own distinctive pattern

  • Labelled with a vintage batik dye tab

  • Given that the dyeing process is done by hand, it is important to note that there may be variations in colour and occasional colour accumulation at specific points

  • Please note actual colour and pattern may vary from product image
